Concert Review: The Maine, Mayday Parade, & The Postelles (11/2)

Author: Tori

On 11/2 I attended The Maine, Mayday Parade, and The Postelles concert in Orlando, Fl. Kicking off the show were The Postelles. I am not going to lie, I had mixed feelings about their performance. Don't get me wrong, their music was fun, bluesy rock but it sounded ordinary and based on the live show all of the songs sounded too similar. They did great in getting the crowd energized which means they did their job as an opening band. My only other comment was the lead singer's attitude.  I, along with many other audience members, felt that he was over-confident (perhaps it is because he lifted his shirt one too many times) and after one technical issue he threw a fit while on stage. His behavior seemed slightly unprofessional and unnecessary. Musically, they were a great fit for the show and I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it a little bit.

Next up was Mayday Parade and let me tell you, I have never seen fans as enthusiastic and zealous as the Mayday Parade crowd. Every single song (aside from "Terrible Things") called for excessive jumping and screaming. Their entrance was unexpected: Derek strode on stage and immediately sat on his piano bench to perform Stay and the energy was undeniable as the rest of the band made their way in front of the audience. After seeing Mayday Parade live for the first time I have a new admiration for them. They didn't rely on anything other than their music to stun the audience and Derek seemed just as exhilarated as the fans. Perhaps the most moving part of the evening was when Derek performed "Terrible Things" solo with his acoustic guitar; is was magical hearing everyone sing along louder than the speakers' volume and at the same time, the songs lyrics were heart wrenching. Later in the show, Derek told a story from his high school years when he drove from Tallahassee to see a show in the same exact venue. It is amazing to see how far Mayday Parade has come as a band in the last few years and they deserve every bit of success.  By the end of their set, the band's energy dimmed as their jumps turned into limps; that is quite understandable considering how much they were running around throughout the show (performing in a band seems like a good workout alternative from a dull treadmill routine). If you are a fan of All Time Low, Go Radio, or The Summer Set you will love Mayday Parade. Last but certainly not least was The Maine. If you aren't familiar with The Maine they are a band you need to know. Their music has a classic rock vibe while they still manage to sound current. I have seen The Maine live a few times and they remain one of the best live bands I have ever seen...they are remarkable every single time. Their performance was well coordinated in every aspect but at the same time, they appeared very laid back. John is a pro when it comes to engaging the crowd; he joked around and his humor got the whole room chuckling. Something unique about The Maine is their ability to transform the style of certain songs when they perform them. Although John gets a lot of attention as the frontman, the rest of the band did a superb job performing as well; a specific highlight of the show was Garrett rolling around on the ground while playing his bass (he was clearly enjoying the song). If you ever have a chance to see The Maine live, don't miss it. They never disappoint and you are guaranteed to have a fun evening at one of their shows.
