Davina Leone Interview with Rock Forever Magazine

1. You are currently working hard to spread the word about anti-bullying. What inspired you to get so involved in this cause? "I was bullied all throughout high school and music was always there for me in times of trouble. I really wanted to help kids veer their energy towards healthy hobbies instead of becoming consumed with social media or self-destructive behavior which is so easy nowadays. I thought I went through all of it so I could help others going through it as well."

2. On “The Message Tour” you travel to schools to speak to students about the dangers of bullying and the importance of self-esteem. For anyone experiencing bullying right now, what is your #1 piece of advice for them? "Stay strong and know that you are not the one with the problem! Almost always, people bully because of their own issues and project them onto other people, so don’t turn it inwards. Love yourself because you are good enough."

3. You have a popular YouTube channel featuring some great covers. Out of all of the videos that you have posted, which one is your favorite and why? "I think my favorite one would have to be my cover of “Misguided Ghosts” by Paramore. I really felt that song and it spoke to me, since it released while I was in high school going through everything. So that video is a perfect depiction of how music would help me when I needed something to turn to. I did the cover super quickly before I left to school and Hayley Williams ended up tweeting it!"

4. Your debut album “Awake” is available on iTunes now – can you tell us a little more about it? "I wrote the album while I was in that transit period of adolescence and young adulthood so it’s pretty much a fun rollercoaster journey of self-discovery, relationships, and having a good time. There are songs about realizing you’re stronger, some about discovering you’re more vulnerable than you thought, and then just fun songs to dance to and sing along to with your friends!"

5. For anyone unfamiliar with your music, if they could only listen to one song from the album to get to know you better, which song should they listen to and why? "Although it has a retro sound, I think “Smile for Me” really shows who I am as an artist. It came from my heart from writing it in my room with my guitar to developing the video’s script. I really felt like myself and I think it shows through whenever I sing it."

6. If you had to come up with a mission statement of what you want to accomplish through your music, what would it be? "Don’t be afraid to be yourself! If doing what you love makes you feel great and doesn’t hurt anyone, you should be allowed to express yourself freely and comfortably."

7. What has been the highlight of your career so far? "Seeing kids stand up from their chairs and dance joyfully with each other to my songs while on the Message Tour. It was a moment of pure bliss seeing these kids so happy and carefree and enjoying the music. They thanked me and hugged me afterwards. It made me feel like I helped make their day great!"

8. What are your upcoming plans and what can fans expect from you in the near future? "I have a new EP coming out next month and tons of new music on the way! I wrote it with my brother Jon who is also my producer and the songs are really fun!"
