Nina Nesbitt is a 19 year old Scottish pop singer/songwriter. She is known for her raw talent and relatable lyrics. After being discovered by Ed Sheeran, they hit the road together and she appeared in his music video for “Drunk.”
Now, Nina is taking over the US with her debut self-titled EP and her upcoming full-length album. We had a chance to ask her about her musical inspirations, dream collaborations, fashion tips, and more. Check out the Q&A below:
For anyone who hasn’t heard your music yet, what is the #1 thing you want people to know about you?
"I write about real life, have a listen and make your mind up :)"
You just released the “Nina Nesbitt” EP this month. One standout track is “Stay Out.” Was there a particular experience in your life that prompted you to write that song?
I was writing quite miserable break up songs for ages, and wanted a song that was going to be fun and a good live track. I basically wrote about a night out. The day after I had a writing session, and thought it would be a funny topic.
In another interview, you mentioned that you’re inspired by anyone and anything that makes you feel something. What do you hope listeners will feel when they listen to your music?
I guess I always hope people can relate. And I hope to help people through things with my music, and remember that we all go through the same things.
I know you are hoping to release a full-length album in the US later this year. How is the writing and recording process going so far? Can you give us any details yet?
It's finished, and the album is out in the UK already! It was a lengthy process but I'm really happy with the final outcome! I think I'll add a few new tracks on to it for America.
How will this upcoming album compare to your EP?
The album is a step forward definitely, it's a lot edgier and I would say a bit more mature.
You released a music video for “Selfies” a few months ago. What is the story behind the song and how did you come up with the music video concept?
“Selfies" is a modern day break up song, I guess, it's not really about selfies. It's more about when people feel low about themselves and seek attention and assurance through posting pictures online about what a great time they're having when in reality, it's not so great. We've all done it at some point!
Ed Sheeran discovered you, and you were also in his video for “Drunk.” Since you’ve spent quite a bit of time with him, how has he inspired you or influenced your sound?
I think it's nice to see he just travels about with an acoustic guitar even though he plays to big crowds. When he broke in the UK, it opened up a path for hundreds of other singer-songwriters to come through, too. So I think it's definitely helped the acoustic scene in general!
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would you like to work with next?
I like Pharrell at the moment and I like David Bowie. Neither of which will happen but hey, a girl can dream!
In the past few years, you have experienced massive success as a musician. How has your perspective of the music industry changed since you started?
It's like everything you’ve been warned about before you get into it, you soon experience when you are fully in it. It's such a tough industry, but there's no where else id rather be. I like the excitement and uncertainty.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I couldn't pick one, but T In The Park festival in the UK last year was pretty crazy, about 9,000 people turned up to see me play - I loved it!
You have amazing style! In fact, I’ve seen you on several fashion blogs recently! For anyone who wants to emulate your style, what are your top three beauty and fashion tips?
Why thank you! Errrr I don't know, I just kinda put surf spray in my hair and put on clothes I feel comfy in! I think that's the best way. Be comfy, pick things that suit you, and don't take yourself to seriously.
What are your upcoming plans for the rest of 2014?
Touring and festival-ing and making new music!
